Knee – joint replacement is a procedure that involves replacing an injured or sick knee with an artificial joint, or prosthesis.
The prosthesis is ready of metal alloys, plastics, and polymers. It mimics the function of a knee. According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), replacement knees can fit your wants and specifications. When selecting a prosthetic knee, your doctor will take into description your:
3. activity level
4. overall health
The procedure to take out your old knee and replace it with a prosthesis usually takes less than two hours, but revival and rehabilitation can last months.
Another name for this procedure is knee arthroplasty. Knee replacements are a very common surgery. The AAOS notes that over 600,000 knee replacements occur every year in the United States.
Despite unbearable pain and decreased mobility, many people with knees damaged by arthritis put off joint-replacement surgery out of fear and improbability. But last week, a central panel found that replacing a diseased joint with synthetic parts quickly relieved pain and improved mobility and quality of life in 90 percent of the patients.
After two and a half days of presentations, the board had solid proof to support the security and effectiveness of total replacement, but scant reports on the disparities between men and women and whites and members of minorities.
The 11-member panel, which the National Institutes of Health convened, also found that the results lasted for years and that woman, who could benefit most from total replacement, and marginal patients did not contain the surgery as often as white men.
The panel evaluated replacement of three parts of the knee joint, including surfaces of the kneecap, the top of the shinbone and the underneath of the thighbone.
The surgery is so capable the panel said, that many more people from all classifications should judge it. Just 1 percent of the simulated joints fail each year. Near 20 years out, studies show, 20 percent will require replacement. ”Several studies show that total knee replacement may be an underutilized procedure.
